The Tiny Machine

The Tiny Machine is a simple computer design, which follows the Von Neumann Architecture; consisting of a CPU, main memory, and an input/output system. The main memory of the Tiny Machine is composed of sixteen unique 4-bit memory locations; of which allow users to create programs which use any of the sixteen permitted instructions. The Tiny Machine is primarily utilized in education; helping students understand the lowest level of machines by demonstrating the different number of processes that a computer can perform with a small amount of memory locations, sixteen 4-bit memory addresses to be exact and allows the computer to carry out minute tasks. The Tiny Machine has not been completely built but has been started as of 2015.
==Origin==

The design concept of the Tiny Machine was developed by Conor McBride, current lecturer at the University of Strathclyde, within the department of Computer and Information Sciences. He has numerous publications in the field of computer science and is known for his work in type theory and functional programming in Haskell. He decided to create the Tiny Machine to aid him in teaching the lowest level machine languages to students and show the how is it like to be a machine and the ways it works. The Tiny Machine is used in the class ‘Computer Systems and Organisation’, which analyses the inner workings of computers, such as logic gates and binary representation of information. He created the tiny machine in order to show his students how the lowest level of computer languages function in a more simplistic way rather than trying to explain how a modern computer uses millions of memory locations and processing multiple tasks at one time. Although there is not a physical version of the machine, Conor McBride has currently tasked one of his PHD students to build the Tiny Machine for future use and to give live demonstrations of it working withing lectures.
